The merchants of Savannah are mor tified at the decline of that port in cot ton receipts, the shrinkage being about 50,000 bales. As usual, the railroads. are blamed. r . Maj. There are nine hundred thousand spindles in the cotton mills of Lowell in IS83 against less than six hundred thou sand in 1S73. The capacity of the paper mills of Hollyoke and the woolen mills of Maine and New Hampshire has in creased about the same ratio. Hence water powers that were sufiiciem tea years ago are inadequate to day. Klectric motors will solve that difficulty in less than a decade. i The Boston Commercial Bulletin puts the casein a nutshell thus: "Parties may honestly differ as t the degrees of protection desirablo at any given time on a given article, but it is safe to Predict that no party, will commit the blunder of advocating free trade or pro tection for itself alone. Both are ex pedients. The folly of him who advo cates free trade as an economic "princi-J pie as anything more than a means to amend, is only exceeded by the Toily of him whoadypcatca protection for its own sake.". Columbus Corbett, a n'ttiTe of this city, but now a resident of Ken tucky, is here on a visit for the first time in twenty-two years. Dr. Cor bett received his diploma from the New York Medical College at the same time, we think, as the late Dr. (and Col.) II. fi. Flanner. Ho removed to Georgia for the practice of his profession and from there went to Kentucky, where he now resides. He was one of Morgan's men during the war, Painful Acclcteut. Robert Lane, a colored boy about 14 years of age, went to the Carolina Rice Mills this noon to carry a dinner to one ot tho workmen, and while there had the misfortune to get his right hand caught in some ol the machinery, and one of his lingers so badly mutilated that amputation became necessary. He was taken at once to the office of Dr. W. J. H. Bellamy, who rendered the necessary surgical assistance. Aside from the linger that was amputated was another in wnich the bones were bro ken and the hand was in other ways badly bruised. A train on Iuy. Metamora. the Indian Chief, who has done duty so long as a sentinel at the tobacco store of Mr. II. Barkhim er, and who mysteriously disappeared about five weeks ago, was returned to his old pedestai this morning. It was brought in a cart by a colored boy who stated t hat his father .'oXind it floating in the river opposite the southern portion of the eity. The old chief looks a little storm tossed and weather worn, but will, we trust, be able to do good duty lor many years to come.
